Alert: Phone scam warning

Phone scams aimed at patients are becoming more common. Callers may pretend to be Medicare, an insurer, a doctor’s office, or another clinic. The goal is to obtain a Medicare number or other personal information.

What is EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy. Dr. Riedo offers EMDR when the evaluation supports it: for trauma, and for clinical work that sits next to sexual addiction, pornography addiction, infidelity, and betrayal trauma.

What is EMDR therapy? Educational video from EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), the professional association for this method. It is not a patient testimonial and is not an endorsement of this practice. About EMDR therapy · Watch on YouTube.

What the method is

EMDR was developed as a structured psychotherapy for trauma and other distressing life experiences. Sessions use bilateral stimulation—often side-to-side eye movements, sometimes a light bar or tactile pulses—while the person attends to a target. The work does not require talking at length about every detail of the event. The aim is to help the brain reprocess material that has remained stuck, so that the memory is less vivid and less charged. That is a description of the method.

How treatment is organized

EMDRIA describes EMDR in eight phases across a course of sessions: history and planning, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation. The video on this page explains those phases. How many sessions are needed depends on the evaluation.

When Dr. Riedo uses EMDR

Dr. Riedo offers EMDR for adults when the evaluation supports it. That can include trauma, PTSD, and other memories that have stayed too loud. In the CSAT specialty, EMDR is used when indicated as part of treatment for sexual addiction, pornography addiction, compulsive sexual behavior, infidelity, betrayal trauma, and intimacy-based disorders. It is one method among others, not a separate clinic.

DeTUR

Standard EMDR works with memories that have stayed too loud. Addiction often arrives as something else: an urge that shows up in the body before a story does. A phone. A tab. A door closing. The nervous system is already moving toward the behavior.

DeTUR—Desensitization of Triggers and Urge Reprocessing—is an EMDR protocol developed by A.J. Popky, Ph.D., for addictions and other compulsive behaviors. Dr. Riedo is trained in it. It sits inside EMDR. It is not a different therapy, and it is not used instead of evaluation.

The target is not only the old event. The target is the trigger that lights the urge, and the urge itself. After a positive treatment goal has been installed—what functioning looks like when the behavior is no longer running the hour—bilateral stimulation is used while those triggers are identified and desensitized. Resources are accessed first. Relapse prevention is part of the protocol, not an afterthought.

That is why the method belongs next to CSAT work. Sexual addiction and compulsive pornography use are organized around cues: a time of day, a feeling, a device, a stretch of loneliness. Talking about the cue is useful. Teaching the brain a different response to it is the clinical task DeTUR was built for. When both the old injury and the present urge are present, trauma-focused EMDR and DeTUR can sit in the same course of treatment.
